Minimalism

Did you know that clutter is bad for your health? Neither did I! I thought that statement was a little dramatic. However, a 2017 survey revealed that 91% of Australians are weighed down with unnecessary items which are making us feel anxious, guilty and depressed.

Marie Kondo’s translated text, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up gives some very in-depth info on how to rectify this situation. However, once we tidy, declutter and have a clean slate we tend to re-fill with new, shiny ‘stuff’, otherwise known as, you guessed it, clutter.

Now I don’t know what the magic solution is here in this era of consumerism but minimalism seems to be a growing trend. As real estate agents, we can’t stress enough how important it is to de-clutter before putting your home on the market.

It gives your home a more spacious feel, assists us to get the best potential out of the photos and marketing, helps potential buyers visualise their own things in the space and will help you feel calmer and more organised in an otherwise stressful time.

Marie recommends that you discard all unwanted items before tidying by category, for example clothing, books, papers, sentimental items etc. She then goes on to say that storage experts are in fact hoarders (which makes me feel much better about my own obsession with minimalism) and that there is little need for commercial storage items.

So there you have it. Good luck with your mission. Start with at least 2 boxes, things to take to the tip and things to donate to St. Vinnie’s and crank the tunes. Before you know it, you are well on your way to a simplified, organised life that creates a calm and motivated mindset.
